ANTIGONG AGONG under the lens of Aristotle’s Six Elements of Tragedy

On Aristotle’s On Poetics, he pointed out six elements of tragedy: Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, and Melody.

Plot

The plot of the Antigong Agong also follows the Freytag’s Triangle:

Introduction/Exposition: The story begun with the introduction of the characters in the story.

Rising Action: The rising action is when the first conflict(the Dowry) was introduced.

Climax: The Climax is when the group went to Bundok Dahu to look for the antigong agong and eventually they ended up being back in the time  that is 100 years ago.

Falling Action: The falling action is when they got back to the present time. It is also here when they had their own realizations.

Resolution: In the resolution, the moral lessons were exposed and the couple lived happily, having two good news: the scholarship and their Dowry problem solved.

Characters

Four Points:

1. They shall be good. In the play, the characters like Samsullah is a good one.

2. Appropriate. The actors were appropriate for the characters given to them. The characters were Tausugs and lives near the Bundok Dahu, and so are the actors. Therefore, they can easily relate to the story.

3. Like the reality. Since the actors were apropriate, they were able to portray their characters well as if they were really thet person.

4. Consistent and the same throughout. The actors of the Antigong Agong did a great job in being consistent in their emotions in the play inspite of many disturbances like noise and their personal emotions.

Diction

With regards to the diction, not having Filipino and English languages as their native tongue, the actors still were able to say every word clearly that makes them a good communicator(actor-audience communication). In the play, the playwright did a great job combining these languages to make the story more interesting and understandable.

Thought

Diction is accompanied by thought. The thought is the meaning behind every word that comes out from the actor’s mouth. The thought of the play is very deep and has been well shown by the playwright. Writing a history into a theatrical play is such a difficult job to do but the playwright did a great job.

Spectacle

Spectacle refers to the overall stage appearance. The play really appeared great. Not only with their beautiful costumes and props together with their very dynamic stage design, but also with the facial reactions of the performers. In every single event or scene in the play, there is a great unison with regards to the performers’ physicall appearance, props and background.

Melody

What is a musical play without music? Antigong Agong, personally, is the finest Musical that I ever watched. It used both indigenous and imported musical instruments to create such a marvelpous production. It is also packed with beautiful songs and dances performed by the performers. The instruments were also used for sound effects that turns the theater into a particular setting in the story.

ANTIGONG AGONG: More than Just a Theatrical Performance

Antigong Agong

“Thanks to Antigong Agong!” said one of its amazed and enlightened audiences during their performance at the University of the Philippines in Mindanao last December 6, 2006. This was the seventh time that the musical play was performed here in Davao City. Antigong Agong is a musical theater bannered by two of the most prominent artists in the theater and music field respectively. The play was written and directed by two-time Palanca Awardee Mr. Arnel Mardoquio with Davaoeño artist Popong Landero as the Musical Director.

History to a Theatrical Presentation

Way back in 1906, at Jolo, a massacre happened at Bundok Dahu. This massacre was said to be the root of rebellion of some Tausugs at the present. This massacre was then called “The Bud Dahu Massacre.” The concept of the play begun after Mr. Mardoquio took part of a workshop about the Bu Dahu (Bundok Dahu) at Jolo January this year. He met with the descendants of the survivor of the massacre and was able to put the history into a script. The next time Mr. Mardoquio went to Jolo, we brought Pepito Sumayan (Production Manager) and Mario Leofer Lim (Asst. Director and Choreographer). It was on the third trip to Jolo when the three mentioned above had Davaoeño artists Popong Landero and Maree Contaoi (Stage Designer and Performer). The play was made because the direct descendants and elders waned to tell the whole world about their story. It was also made in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Bud Dahu Massacre.

The Play

The play was about a group of fresh graduates named Nadzmi (Edwin Tantalie), Faidal (Mohammad Al-Jainal Benson, Fatima (Nurmina Hadi), Amrayda (Babylyn Kissail), and Samsullaw/”Sam” (Gamrazer Albani) who wanted to get out of Jolo in order to experience life that is more than what they have experienced, a life moving in the sounds of guns and bombs. Sam wants to marry Amrayda but Amrayda’s Father (Nadzmi Salahuddin) would not allow them until Sam could provide dowry. Sam thought of going to work abroad to earn enough money for the dowry but Amrayda told her not to do so since she found out another solution to their problem. This solution was suggested by her Grandmother (Maree Contaoi). She and Amrayda’s father would give a huge amount to anyone who could bring back a property that their family owns for a century, the “Antigong Agong.” The group then went to search for the antigong agong while Amrayda’s Grandma became sick. In their search a spirit of their elders told them that it was at the Bundok Dahu. When they got there, they saw the antigong agong but when they took it, the spirit of their elders got angry and possessed their bodies that led them to be back at the past 100 years ago. With the flashback, they witnessed what happened at the Bud Dahu Massacre by American soldiers. When the spirits got out of their body, they had many realizations about their history. The play ended when they came home with the antigong agong being welcomed with both good and bad news- Amrayda’s Grandma died and the reward was raised to a higher amount. Sam also received a letter saying that he passed in a scholarship.

All throughout the presentation, scenes were filled with songs and dances which is backed with a music pool composed of indigenous instruments like kulintang, agong, dabakan, gabang, and the likes. In the play, many controversies were revealed. First is about the Bud Dahu Massacre by American soldiers which is not written in our history books. The betrayal by Adam was also shown in the play. The story also had social, economical, and cultural aspects giving highlights to problems such as poverty, war, discrimination on women, dowry, “Balikatan,” and Tausugs who want to go out of Jolo.

The Stage

The stage was designed by Maree Contaoi. It is a originally a 16 feet-stage but it was lowered by two feet when it was brought in Davao. It is made of lumber and bamboo. It also have moveable parts (with wheels). According to the performers, so far, there has never been a serious accident caused by the stage.

The Performers

“Antigong Agong” is performed by the Puddang Lupah Sug Artists’ Guild (PDLSAG). The group first started as a student organization at the Mindanao State University-Jolo. As of the present, it is no longer a student organizationand it is composed of “out-of-school youth.”

Rehearsals and Performances Worth Remembering

The rehearsals took 28 days while it was stopped for three days due to armed conflict. According to Ms. Maree Contaoi, it is really scary practicing with the play while they could hear the gun shots from encounters between the military and rebels. The first performance was at Jolo, in front of the direct descendants and the elders in the community. According to Nadzmi Salahuddin (the one who portrayed as Amrayda’s Father), after their first performance, everybody was crying; the descendants, elders, staff, and even them as the performers. Until their most recent performance, they could still feel like crying but they just control their emotions. There were also times when some of the actors were possessed by other victims of the massacre right after their performances. Since that time, they perform rituals and prayers for the spirits to let them perform and guide them while performing before rehearsals and performances.

Their performances already had two legs: the First and the Second one. Performances in the first leg were performed at Jolo and Zamboanga. The second leg is the Davao Leg wherein they performed at the Matina Town Square, Ateneo de Davao University – High School, Ateneo de Davao University – College, University of the Philippines in Mindanao, and University of Southeastern Philippines. Ms. Maree said , being a performer of so many plays, it is only in the “Antigong Agong” where she experienced signing autographs for the audience. “Dito ko lang na-experience yung parang Starstruck na may mga nagpapapirma.” She said.

A Closer Look

Gamraser “Sam” J. Albani is the youngest among all the performers in the play. He is only 18 years old and a high school graduate. As the writer conducted an interview with him, his eyes were glittering, seeing the real happiness within him being part of the “Antigong Agong.” He was not able to go to college due to financial problems. He became part of the PLSAG only on the time of the Antigong Agong. He was recommended by a friend to be part of it. When asked on how he feels being the lead role of such a marvelous production, he said that he is really nervous. According to him, he doesn’t really have any other talent other than acting. “Wala talaga akong talent in sa pagkanta at pagsayaw, acting lang talaga.” He said. On the first leg, his role was as a Taong Bayan but during that span of time, he was selected to act as Sam in the second leg since the original actor for Sam already went abroad. He is very thankful for the group because he became part of it and he made use of his time well. “Lubos lubos talaga ang pasasalamat ko sa kanila kasi kung hindi dahil sa kanila, nakatambay lang ako sa bahay ngayon.”

The Goals

The main objective for the presentation is to inform the people about the Bud Dahu Massacre and to remove the wrong impression to the Tausugs being “terrorists.” The group also aim to have their third leg at Visayas and hopefully to perform abroad. The “Antigong Agong” truly is more than just a musical theater. Aside from the extravagant features of the presentations such as the costumes and stage design, the performers were really credible for their part in the play. This is because the aim of the play is also the aim of each and every person as part of the production. They did not only amazed their estimated 500 audience with the great choreography and sound effects, they also were able to capture their heart and have enlightened them from the darkness that the Americans have brought to us through our present history books nowadays.

The “Antigong Agong” is sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in cooperation with the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), TM ang bagong Touch Mobile, Peace Builders’ Committee, the Brothers of Sacred Heart, Better Components Incorporated, Better Music Factory Outlet Philippines, ADI Guitar, Mergrande Ocean Resort, ABS-CBN FM Radio, MOR 101.1, The Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) Matina Town Square and the hosting Universities.

On TWO-hog /tuhog/

On the first thought, the movie entitled “Tuhog” gives the impression of a bold film. It is starred with sexy artists like Ina Raymundo and Klaudia Koronel..

The truth is, this movie is more than just a bold film.. It gives many values and also targeted the media ethics specifically in the film industry.

We watched this film in our Communication Arts 110 – Aesthetics class as a subject for our discussions. The film is not only a good example of Aristotle’s notion of Imitation as I have mentioned in my previous entry, but also a good subject in determining a movie if it is aesthetically sound.

Theoretically, the movie follows the Freytag’s Triangle..

Freytag’s Triangle

In Technique of the Drama (1863), Gustav Freytag outlined what he considered to be the most successful structure for a play, based on the writings of Aristotle, Shakespeare, and the format of the well-made play (which we will discuss later in the semester). Briefly, Freytag believed the action of the play could be organized in the shape of a triangle, stressing that there should be five distinct parts:

3. climax
/\
/     \
2. rising action         /         \        4. falling action
/             \
/________ \
1. introduction                                                           5. resolution
 (a.k.a. exposition)                                                     (a.k.a. denouement)

  1. The introduction (or exposition) explains the place and time of the action, and briefly characterize the environment. Often, the exposition is a summary of what has happened before the play itself begins. In Oedipus the King, the introduction is where we find out that we are in Athens, there has been an ongoing plague, and that Oedipus is the man who solved the riddle of the Sphinx long ago to become king.        In Tuhog, the exposition begun with the introduction of the main characters and the diffferent characteristics of each: Floring as a bit abnormal girl, his mother Perla as a victim of sexual abuse by his father, Amang. It is also here when Floring was raped by her Amang.
  2. The rising action begins when the events of the play are set in motion. They should produce a progressive intensity of interest, each building upon the last until you finally reach a climax of action. In Oedipus, rising actions include sending Creon to the oracle, which leads to hearing the cause of the plague; hearing the prophesies of Tiresias, who says Oedipus himself is the murderer; Jocasta making fun of the oracles; the Messenger from Corinth bringing news of the death of Oedipus’s “father”; the revelations of the Shepherd.       In Tuhog, the rising action is when a director and a producer approached Floring and Perla to make their Life story in to a movie.
  3. The climax is the highest point of the action, the highest point of tension, after which the rest of the play becomes inevitable. Freytag says that this should be a “vividly conspicuous” point in the action, but sometimes we can find differing points of interpretation. In Oedipus, the climax occurs just after the Shepherd’s revelations, when Oedipus finally realizes that he himself is the murderer, and that he has actually fulfilled the oracle’s prophesies.         In Tuhog, the Climax is when in the movie “Hayok sa Laman” Floring’s character named Hasmin is being raped by her Amang and at the same time Floring(in the real life) saw herself on the big screen.  It is also on this part when the movie turned into a suspense with regards to Amang being back to life(they thought he already died), chasing them with a gun.
  4. The falling action occurs after the climax. It is usually shorter than the rising action, since there is necessarily less suspense. The falling action shows the result of the climax, and sometimes includes a calm before the storm: a moment when we believe that everything can still turn out all right. In Oedipus, the falling actions include Jocasta’s suicide and Oedipus’s offstage blinding.         The falling action in Tuhog is when Amang died and Perla’s character Violeta became a mentally retarded person.
  5. The resolution (also known variously as the denouement or catastrophe) is the closing action, where the loose ends of the play are tied. It must be brief and simple, where the character’s downfall is relieved through a great deed. In Oedipus, this is where Oedipus begs for (and is granted) exile, and we understand that life will return to normal in Athens.            The Resolution in Tuhog is when the two lovers, Hasmin and Adan lived happily. In real life, the resolution happened when they went back home.

imitation???

Asa ang ORIG? ug asa ang IMITATION?

hahahah! mura mag victoria plaza kay daghag imitation na sapatos… (jokez_101)

Seryoso na ni… aha ang ORIG ug aha ang IMITATION??

eto pa..

According to Plato (Book X of The Republic), ang original daw ay yung gawa ng CREATOR or the IDEA ITSELF at lahat ng mga nahahawakan at nakikita natin ngayon ay IMITATION.

In a way, he said that it is way better to be a carpenter than to be an artist.

Mas pinaniniwalaan ko ngayon ang notions ni Aristotle on this topic.

Beauty…

Is she beautiful?

her?

her??

What about……..

HER???

On the first meeting that we had in our Communication Arts 110 – Aesthetics class, we were asked to answer the following question:

  1. What/Who do you consider beautiful?
  2. What are your criteria to consider something or someone beautiful?
  3. Does thios criteria apply to other things?

Beauty is an abstract. We have different definitions…

“Beautyis relative…and she is my first cousin.” That’s what our instructor, sir Nino said. Well, indeed, beauty is relative, but it isn’t sir Nino’s relative..she is my relative.. :-) juz kidin…

We have our own set of criteria in considering whether someone/something beautiful or not.

As for me, beauty is found from within. It is naked to human eye. It is being true to yourself, and not being ashamed of who you REALLY are.
