piktyuresei…

Sir Nino instructed us to have a picture essay… he saidthat we have to let the audience experience what we have experienced throughthe photos.. pictures on our photo essays doesn’t necessarily ours, meaning we can download photos from the internet…

I, as a person who loves Photography, have thought of taking the pictures on my own…

PLANNING??? :-)

I first thought of making a picture essay of the UP in Mindanaos Dance Ensemble’s concert, the Dance Portfolio.. I went there just to take pictures of the said event… fine, I admit it, I went there for two reasons, to watch and support my girlfriend :-) and to take the photos.. When I got there, I was ready… camera?check… battery?check… enough memory?check… When the show begun until it ended, I got……pictures… heheh, I had a hard time to take the photos… aside from the dark lighting(flash are not allowed), I couldn’t help going near the stage and blocking some of the audience’s view on the dances…

Weekend…. I still couldn’t think of another topic…

when I found myself babysitting my cousin, Aries…

3 in 1… a blog entry for the film Babel..

three in one..

this is how i would describe the award winning movie Babel..

the movie was directed by Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu…

yup, the director of aanother award winning films Amores Perros and 21 Grams…

Babel won awards in the Cannes Film Festival (Best Director, Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, and Technical Grand Prize), Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture – Drama), Gotham Awards (Best Ensemble Cast), and many more along with numerous nominations in other award giving bodies.

I have mentioned of the casts, this film includes:

Brad Pitt

Cate Blanchett

Adriana Barraza

Gael Garcia Bernal

Koji Yakusho

Rinko Kikuchi

Now, why 3 in 1?

Just like Amores Perros and 21 Grams, this movie gives us three inter-related stories in one movie. The first one is about a couple (Pitt and Blanchett) who are in a vacation in Morocco, when Blanchett got hit by a gun. She was hit by a kid with his brother who got the gun from their father. The gun was given to the father by a Japanese hunter. This leads to the second story that was set in Tokyo, Japan. The Japanese hunter’s daughter who is a deaf mute is struggling to overcome pain due to the death of her mother. The third one is the story of the couple’s housekeeper’s (Barraza) happiness and struggles as she brought the couple’s children to Mexico illegally (without legal papers) without their parents’ consent.

On Audience, Actor, and Star

I would like to reconstruct this film based on Stanley Cavell’s essay Audience, Actor, and Star…

In a film, as compared to theatre, audience is not considered to be present mechanically. The film is done in front of the cameras, lights, directors, staff and crew, not infront of spectators. With this, actors are not fully expected to be really great actors unlike those of theatre. I’m not saying that theatre actors are better, its just that these actors(theatre) doesn’t have any room for any mistakes because of one single element, their live audience. A theatre actor projeccts the character during a performance, a screen actor, on the other hand, the performer itself is being projected by character. In the movie Babel, for example, Brad Pitt is being projected by his character in the film. If Babel was a theatrical performance, Brad Pitt is the one projecting his character.

Star, we often here this term nowadays, referring to the actors and actresses. Superstar, mega star, star for all seasons, starlets… name it, we had it all.. what is common to these is being called Star. As Stanley Cavell said in his essay, “…the stars are to gaze at, after the fact, and their actions divine ur projects.

On Space, Time and Motion in Film

According to Alexander Sesonske on his essay Space, Time and Motion in Film; space, time and motion are the primary formal categories in cinema.

Space… how in the world can we determine space in a film since it is just contained in the frames of our TV screens or in the widescreens at movie houses? That’s what make es this aspect of cinema tricky… in this aspect, we see the film’s space through way or manner of framing the scenes in the film with the use of the cameras. Different techniques were used, such as long and short focal lengths. Close up shots shows more details, more intensity, more proxemics… Long shots on the other hand shows motions as a whole. As compared to those close up shots, close up shots shows us more motions, as we objects in the frame in constant motion. On the film Babel, as I could recall, there is a point where I got thirsty. This was when the housekeeper, along with the kids, are in the middle of a dessert. The long shots or open spaces that shows great implication on the setting and weather condition on that particular scene, shows the audience how hot and how tiring it is to be in their situation.

Time… the time in a film or in the world of the film is shown through many different techniques such as facial hairs, wrinkles, and etc. Honestly speaking, in Babel, I had a hard time getting track of the time because the film is not just compose of three stories, but also of two locations (Morocco and Japan).  These locations doesn’t have the same time; if the one is night, the other is daytime…

Motion… in a film, we see so many movements, so many that we would have a hard time noticing that these movements are of great significance or have great effect on us as viewers.. In a scene wherein the frame or the camera moves along with the character, it gives us greater idea of motion than just seeing the frame still while the character moves across the scene. In this situation, the motion becomes part of the composition.

Ausience…Actor…Space…Time…Motion… these elements in the film Babel where constantly presented and well considered… I believe, that this made it possible for the film to win so many awards and made it considered a true….Star…

Wong Kar-wai’s

“In the Mood for Love”…

a film that suffocates my eyes.. heheheh, this isn’t because the film isn’t good, but because of some, majority of the shots that was taken…

If you would watch the film, shots were taken in tight locations.. Tight locations plus tight camera angles = TIGHT>>>heheheh….

Well, aside from this, ther is another noticeable way in presenting the film… If you would watch the film, you would notice that at some angles, a scene begins with the camera zooming out or slowly tilting from the lower part of the woman’s body… this kind of shot shows a picture of the camera caressing the body of the woman…

Honestly, throughout the film I noticed that most of the audience, including me (I had to admit it) was expecting for the two main characters to have a sensual scene or a bed scene. All of us found ourselves expecting for nothing because that particular scene didn’t even happened.. I believe, that the camera shots made us thought of such thing… heheheh…. hahaaaay, thinking of sensual things, if it’s a sin, it’s not ours, it’s the camera’s…hahah

          who’s rensponsible??

Laura Mulvey has something to say on this matter on her essay Woman as Image, Man as Bearer of the Look

On her essay, she said a reason wht women and not men. “..the male figure cannot bear the burden of sexual objectification. Man is reluctant to gaze at his exhibitionist like.

Basically, it was presented in the essay, using psychoanalysis, that it is the camera that makes it does all the work to make the audience to feel either scopophilic instinct or ego libido… Scopophilic instinct is the pleasure of seeing an erotic object out of another person. Ego libido, on the other hand, is “forming identification process.” Both of these could be inculcated to us through mechanisms and formations in a film that is done through many different camera techniques such as its movements and positionings.

Told ya, its tha CAMERAS!!! heheheh

Citizen Kane (in a Mike Enriquez tune)

have you heard of the Citizen Kane???

no, not that Kane.. that’s Kane the Wrestler…

I mean Citizen Kane… As in the classical movie..

As in the movie that made an impact in Film history…

Yes, it made a great impact in the film history..

What is a film without being accompanied by music?

heheheh…

Citizen Kane was the first film to use music accompaniment.. The music was used to show the moods of the film…

With regards to the camera shots, I really like it.. Sometimes, I have debates on my own on “How in the world are those shots better than shots taken at some movies today(with the technological advancements)?

I like the way that the different types of shots were combined.. such as the panning, zooming in and zooming out, areal shots, dolly shots and many more… However, there were shots wherein the lighting was not managed well.. There were shots where shadows of actors cover a part of another actor’s body…

Eventhough the “newscasters voice” was kinda irritating, I believe that it did its job well, giving an untraditional narration…

Citizen Kane? Definitely more than just a film…

Headache…

would

you

expect

to

have

this

after

watching

a

film

or

a

performance?

I had one.

Twice.

First was when I watched “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

After watching it, I also found myself searching for food in our kitchen.

The headache and hunger was due to the extreme analyzing that my brain had.

The next one was when we, in our Communication Arts 110 – Aesthetics class, watched an art performance entitled “Cremaster 3,” the third of the Cremaster Cycle. It is made and portrayed by Mathew Barney.

It was so hard to understand. It also doesn’t have any dialogue at all.

It was shot in the Guggenheim Museum which is a very prestigous one. (whatever)

There is a part of the museum wherein you can see every part or floor of the building.

On my perspective:

On my perspective, the art performance was all about a person(Barney) who is in a certain training to be a like someone he looks up. At the beginning, the characters were introduced. Among the characters were the trainee(Barney), group of “synchronized girls,” two bands(music), a half-cheetah half-human woman with glass legs, and a “worker at the museum.”

As for me, the characters around the main character means:

Group of “synchronized girls =  trials on the main character’s journey, nature.

Two bands(music) =  The two bands, represents war.

Half-cheetah half-human woman with glass legs =  villain of the story.

Worker at the museum =  the one that the main character looks up and wants to impress.

The main character is on his way to impress the man “he looks up.” This man was at the top most level of the building. The main character first went on the floor where the girls are. The actions of the girls symbolizes the different aspects of nature like caves. The next level, where the bands are shows that the main character literally have passed through wars just to impress him. He then got to the third level, wherein he was carrying and transporting different sculptures. For me, this seemed to be the time when the main character is on a “physical training.” Then to the fourth, to the half-cheetah half-human woman with glass legs. At first, he was tempted by the beautiful lady but it suddenly transformed into a monster. It was also on this level of the building where the “man he looks up” is. He had a fight with the monster and got defeated. He went down to the second floor and got under the legs of the “synchronized girls.” For me, it is a cave where the main character rested and took a nap. He was then dressed up by these girls. This told me that the mother nature was helping him to be a stronger person. Then he fell to the ground floor, in a tub. This scene seemed to show that the main character just woke up from a dream. Then, the background music changed, as if the main character is now more brave and stronger. He quickly climbed to the third floor (war zone), and got a weapon. Then he proceeded to the floor where the monster is and he quickly fought and defeated it as if he was not beated before. Then he was able to impress “the man he looks up.”

That’s it. That is how I understood the performance.

To give you a hint of what I am talking about, here is a preview of the Cremaster 3.

“Rich… you’re soOoo GAY!”

What would one think of if the word monologue would be heard?

Honestly, nung una kong nalaman ang tungkol sa performance na “UNACCESORIZED,” ito agad ang nasabi ko: (before the performance) ” dili gud ko interested ani na performance… i mean, diba, performance, tapos siya lang isa, so monologue..”

On our way to the AVR, nakasalubong namin si Rich Kiamco, at dun, nasabi ko sa sarili kong: “ok man din siguro ‘to..”  I felt a certain aura from him na parang bigla ko na lang nasabi yon..

And I was right, maganda nga ang performance… my GOD!!! it was hilariously funny.. mahilig ako sa mga stand-up comedy kasi pinapanood ko yan sa tv(JackTV-Comedy Central Presents).. But, it was the first time that I watched one in first hand…

Rich is a very talented person. I mean, that is what you call a “PERFORMANCE!!!”

ANTIGONG AGONG under the lens of Aristotle’s Six Elements of Tragedy

On Aristotle’s On Poetics, he pointed out six elements of tragedy: Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought, Spectacle, and Melody.

Plot

The plot of the Antigong Agong also follows the Freytag’s Triangle:

Introduction/Exposition: The story begun with the introduction of the characters in the story.

Rising Action: The rising action is when the first conflict(the Dowry) was introduced.

Climax: The Climax is when the group went to Bundok Dahu to look for the antigong agong and eventually they ended up being back in the time  that is 100 years ago.

Falling Action: The falling action is when they got back to the present time. It is also here when they had their own realizations.

Resolution: In the resolution, the moral lessons were exposed and the couple lived happily, having two good news: the scholarship and their Dowry problem solved.

Characters

Four Points:

1. They shall be good. In the play, the characters like Samsullah is a good one.

2. Appropriate. The actors were appropriate for the characters given to them. The characters were Tausugs and lives near the Bundok Dahu, and so are the actors. Therefore, they can easily relate to the story.

3. Like the reality. Since the actors were apropriate, they were able to portray their characters well as if they were really thet person.

4. Consistent and the same throughout. The actors of the Antigong Agong did a great job in being consistent in their emotions in the play inspite of many disturbances like noise and their personal emotions.

Diction

With regards to the diction, not having Filipino and English languages as their native tongue, the actors still were able to say every word clearly that makes them a good communicator(actor-audience communication). In the play, the playwright did a great job combining these languages to make the story more interesting and understandable.

Thought

Diction is accompanied by thought. The thought is the meaning behind every word that comes out from the actor’s mouth. The thought of the play is very deep and has been well shown by the playwright. Writing a history into a theatrical play is such a difficult job to do but the playwright did a great job.

Spectacle

Spectacle refers to the overall stage appearance. The play really appeared great. Not only with their beautiful costumes and props together with their very dynamic stage design, but also with the facial reactions of the performers. In every single event or scene in the play, there is a great unison with regards to the performers’ physicall appearance, props and background.

Melody

What is a musical play without music? Antigong Agong, personally, is the finest Musical that I ever watched. It used both indigenous and imported musical instruments to create such a marvelpous production. It is also packed with beautiful songs and dances performed by the performers. The instruments were also used for sound effects that turns the theater into a particular setting in the story.

ANTIGONG AGONG: More than Just a Theatrical Performance

Antigong Agong

“Thanks to Antigong Agong!” said one of its amazed and enlightened audiences during their performance at the University of the Philippines in Mindanao last December 6, 2006. This was the seventh time that the musical play was performed here in Davao City. Antigong Agong is a musical theater bannered by two of the most prominent artists in the theater and music field respectively. The play was written and directed by two-time Palanca Awardee Mr. Arnel Mardoquio with Davaoeño artist Popong Landero as the Musical Director.

History to a Theatrical Presentation

Way back in 1906, at Jolo, a massacre happened at Bundok Dahu. This massacre was said to be the root of rebellion of some Tausugs at the present. This massacre was then called “The Bud Dahu Massacre.” The concept of the play begun after Mr. Mardoquio took part of a workshop about the Bu Dahu (Bundok Dahu) at Jolo January this year. He met with the descendants of the survivor of the massacre and was able to put the history into a script. The next time Mr. Mardoquio went to Jolo, we brought Pepito Sumayan (Production Manager) and Mario Leofer Lim (Asst. Director and Choreographer). It was on the third trip to Jolo when the three mentioned above had Davaoeño artists Popong Landero and Maree Contaoi (Stage Designer and Performer). The play was made because the direct descendants and elders waned to tell the whole world about their story. It was also made in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Bud Dahu Massacre.

The Play

The play was about a group of fresh graduates named Nadzmi (Edwin Tantalie), Faidal (Mohammad Al-Jainal Benson, Fatima (Nurmina Hadi), Amrayda (Babylyn Kissail), and Samsullaw/”Sam” (Gamrazer Albani) who wanted to get out of Jolo in order to experience life that is more than what they have experienced, a life moving in the sounds of guns and bombs. Sam wants to marry Amrayda but Amrayda’s Father (Nadzmi Salahuddin) would not allow them until Sam could provide dowry. Sam thought of going to work abroad to earn enough money for the dowry but Amrayda told her not to do so since she found out another solution to their problem. This solution was suggested by her Grandmother (Maree Contaoi). She and Amrayda’s father would give a huge amount to anyone who could bring back a property that their family owns for a century, the “Antigong Agong.” The group then went to search for the antigong agong while Amrayda’s Grandma became sick. In their search a spirit of their elders told them that it was at the Bundok Dahu. When they got there, they saw the antigong agong but when they took it, the spirit of their elders got angry and possessed their bodies that led them to be back at the past 100 years ago. With the flashback, they witnessed what happened at the Bud Dahu Massacre by American soldiers. When the spirits got out of their body, they had many realizations about their history. The play ended when they came home with the antigong agong being welcomed with both good and bad news- Amrayda’s Grandma died and the reward was raised to a higher amount. Sam also received a letter saying that he passed in a scholarship.

All throughout the presentation, scenes were filled with songs and dances which is backed with a music pool composed of indigenous instruments like kulintang, agong, dabakan, gabang, and the likes. In the play, many controversies were revealed. First is about the Bud Dahu Massacre by American soldiers which is not written in our history books. The betrayal by Adam was also shown in the play. The story also had social, economical, and cultural aspects giving highlights to problems such as poverty, war, discrimination on women, dowry, “Balikatan,” and Tausugs who want to go out of Jolo.

The Stage

The stage was designed by Maree Contaoi. It is a originally a 16 feet-stage but it was lowered by two feet when it was brought in Davao. It is made of lumber and bamboo. It also have moveable parts (with wheels). According to the performers, so far, there has never been a serious accident caused by the stage.

The Performers

“Antigong Agong” is performed by the Puddang Lupah Sug Artists’ Guild (PDLSAG). The group first started as a student organization at the Mindanao State University-Jolo. As of the present, it is no longer a student organizationand it is composed of “out-of-school youth.”

Rehearsals and Performances Worth Remembering

The rehearsals took 28 days while it was stopped for three days due to armed conflict. According to Ms. Maree Contaoi, it is really scary practicing with the play while they could hear the gun shots from encounters between the military and rebels. The first performance was at Jolo, in front of the direct descendants and the elders in the community. According to Nadzmi Salahuddin (the one who portrayed as Amrayda’s Father), after their first performance, everybody was crying; the descendants, elders, staff, and even them as the performers. Until their most recent performance, they could still feel like crying but they just control their emotions. There were also times when some of the actors were possessed by other victims of the massacre right after their performances. Since that time, they perform rituals and prayers for the spirits to let them perform and guide them while performing before rehearsals and performances.

Their performances already had two legs: the First and the Second one. Performances in the first leg were performed at Jolo and Zamboanga. The second leg is the Davao Leg wherein they performed at the Matina Town Square, Ateneo de Davao University – High School, Ateneo de Davao University – College, University of the Philippines in Mindanao, and University of Southeastern Philippines. Ms. Maree said , being a performer of so many plays, it is only in the “Antigong Agong” where she experienced signing autographs for the audience. “Dito ko lang na-experience yung parang Starstruck na may mga nagpapapirma.” She said.

A Closer Look

Gamraser “Sam” J. Albani is the youngest among all the performers in the play. He is only 18 years old and a high school graduate. As the writer conducted an interview with him, his eyes were glittering, seeing the real happiness within him being part of the “Antigong Agong.” He was not able to go to college due to financial problems. He became part of the PLSAG only on the time of the Antigong Agong. He was recommended by a friend to be part of it. When asked on how he feels being the lead role of such a marvelous production, he said that he is really nervous. According to him, he doesn’t really have any other talent other than acting. “Wala talaga akong talent in sa pagkanta at pagsayaw, acting lang talaga.” He said. On the first leg, his role was as a Taong Bayan but during that span of time, he was selected to act as Sam in the second leg since the original actor for Sam already went abroad. He is very thankful for the group because he became part of it and he made use of his time well. “Lubos lubos talaga ang pasasalamat ko sa kanila kasi kung hindi dahil sa kanila, nakatambay lang ako sa bahay ngayon.”

The Goals

The main objective for the presentation is to inform the people about the Bud Dahu Massacre and to remove the wrong impression to the Tausugs being “terrorists.” The group also aim to have their third leg at Visayas and hopefully to perform abroad. The “Antigong Agong” truly is more than just a musical theater. Aside from the extravagant features of the presentations such as the costumes and stage design, the performers were really credible for their part in the play. This is because the aim of the play is also the aim of each and every person as part of the production. They did not only amazed their estimated 500 audience with the great choreography and sound effects, they also were able to capture their heart and have enlightened them from the darkness that the Americans have brought to us through our present history books nowadays.

The “Antigong Agong” is sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in cooperation with the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), TM ang bagong Touch Mobile, Peace Builders’ Committee, the Brothers of Sacred Heart, Better Components Incorporated, Better Music Factory Outlet Philippines, ADI Guitar, Mergrande Ocean Resort, ABS-CBN FM Radio, MOR 101.1, The Davao Association of Colleges and Schools (DACS) Matina Town Square and the hosting Universities.
